First Highlights of the 2013-14 Season!

The Lokomotiv preview will be up later tonight, but first of all we need to turn our attention to the fact that the 2013-14 season actually got underway today!  It began, as is traditional, with the Lokomotiv Cup game between last season's Gagarin Cup finalists.  This year's match, of course, featured Dynamo Moscow and Traktor Chelyabinsk, making it also a match-up between the two teams that said "goodbye" to Valery Nichushkin this summer.

It was not, in the end, much of a contest.  Traktor had a nice run last season, but they were no match for Dynamo today.  Michael Garnett was resolute in goal for the Chelyabinsk boys at the beginning, as his team was outshot 18-3 in the first period but led 1-0.  Once he was beaten, however, he was beaten often, and the final was an entirely deserved 5-1 for Dynamo (the final shot total was 39-20).  Leo Komarov and Sergei Soin had a goal and an assist each for the Muscovites.

It may not have been a riveting back-and-forth battle, but there was some nice play to go with some pretty goals, as Dynamo showed off some deft passing.  And so, for the first time this season, we say: "Highlights!":

A quick closing word on the preview series.  It will not, obviously get done in time for the start of the season.  However, never fear, it should be wrapped up over the next 2-3 weeks, in time for the pieces to be previews rather than mid-season report cards!
